Last ride of this beautiful tour, today we took our bikes back to Havana. But, even if the ride was quite short, it was a full day and we had a lot of things to see! We left Varadero not too early, passed through its Central Park (the Parque Jasone) and then continued to the Bacunayagua bridge for a coffee and picture break. After a very good lunch in Jibacoa, we headed to Havana where we had some time for sightseeing before going to the hotel. John, Tony, Bob and Pete, it was a pleasure meeting you and thank you for a beautiful week!
Today we rode on the Circuito Norte, a road that passes through rural areas where it looks like time stood still a few decades ago, very interesting! We had to take it easy because the road is not in very good shape, but we managed to reach Varadero in time for enjoying the facilities of the hotel before dinner. Enjoy the pictures!
A very short ride today, we simply had to go back to the mainland, but along the road we could visit the very interesting museum of sugar industry, a sugar factory that was operating until 1999. Outside the museum there is also a great collection of old steam locomotives, that once transported the "white gold" of Cuba from the factories to the ports, to export it. And tonight we slept in "casas particulares", a kind of local B&B, to get the real cuban flair!
Crossing the island from the southern coast to the northern one was really a pleasure with such a great weather like we had today! We first stopped at the Manaca Iznaga tower in the Valle de los Ingenios, and then continued until Santa Clara, where we could see the monument and mausoleum dedicated to Che Guevara. After that, the road became more flat and straight, and we reached Cayo Santa Maria in time to relax a bit before dinner. Another good day!
Great weather also today as we left Cienfuegos, and the scenery approaching the Sierra del Escambray was breathtaking! We reached the beautiful waterfall of "El Nicho", where we had lunch, and then after many many curves we finally reached the coast. A relaxing break in Yaguanabo by the beach and then we headed to the hotel. And ,to complete our day, a tasty dinner out in the historic centre of Trinidad, a Unesco World Heritage site!
Another tour through the biggest island of the Caribbean has just begun, follow us! Today we moved from Havana to Cienfuegos, so we crossed the Cuba from North to South, quite an easy riding but that was what we needed to get used to the bikes and to the local traffic. Today we rode along the famous Bay of the Pigs where back in 1961 there was an attempt to invade the country, that did not succeed.
