Während Jordanien sich gegenüber dem Tourismus schon lange geöffnet hat, ist Saudi-Arabien für die meisten immer noch ein weißer Fleck auf der Landkarte. So auch für Edelweiss Bike Travel.

Wer jedoch unseren Reisekatalog zu Beginn des Jahres aufmerksam studierte, konnte entdecken, dass Edelweiss sich zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, dieses Manko zu beheben. Nachdem ich bereits 2001 das Vergnügen hatte, Saudi-Arabiens Nachbarland Oman erforschen zu dürfen, bekam ich den Auftrag, Ende April, noch bevor das Thermometer während des Tages in unerträgliche Höhe klettert, Saudi-Arabien und Jordanien für Edelweiss zu entdecken.

Jordanien war kein unbeschriebenes Blatt für mich, ich hatte in der Vergangenheit mehrmals die Gelegenheit, das Land mit seinen kulturellen Highlights zu besuchen. Gerasa, das Tote Meer, Petra, Wadi Rum und Aqaba waren also nicht mehr Neuland. Umso mehr freute ich mich auf Saudi-Arabien, auch auf meiner Landkarte ein weißer Fleck.

Die Tour startet in Jeddah und folgt im Großen und Ganzen der Südwestküste des Landes, bevor man südlich von Aqaba die Grenze nach Jordanien überschreitet. Nach einem Abstecher ins Wadi Rum kehrt man zurück in die Jordansenke und fährt entlang der Küste des Toten Meeres Richtung Norden. Etwa 40 km nördlich von Amman gelangt man nach Gerasa, einst Teil von Dekapolis, einem wichtigen Teil der  römischen Provinz im ersten Jahrhundert vor Christus. Letztendlich umrundet man Amman, um zum südlich der Stadt gelegenen Flughafen zu gelangen.

Saudi-Arabien - ein Land voller Geheimnisse, dem Westen gegenüber bislang reserviert und verschlossen, ein Land, über das man nur Dinge weiß, die man in der Presse findet. Abgesehen von den Angestellten internationaler Firmen und den Gastarbeitern hielt das Land in erster Linie seine Tore nur für muslimische Pilger offen.  Doch das soll sich jetzt ändern - und wir sind mit dabei!

While Jordan has long opened up to tourism, Saudi Arabia is still a blank spot on the map for most. This also applies to Edelweiss Bike Travel.

However, anyone who carefully studied our travel catalog at the beginning of the year, could discover, that Edelweiss had set the goal of remedying this shortcoming. After having had the pleasure to explore Saudi Arabia's neighboring country of Oman in 2001, I was given the task of discovering Saudi Arabia and Jordan for Edelweiss at the end of April, even before the thermometer starts to climb intolerably high during the day.

Jordan was not a blank slate for me, I had the opportunity to visit the country with its cultural highlights several times in the past. So Gerasa, the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba were no longer new territories. The more I was looking forward to Saudi Arabia, a white spot on my map also.

The tour departs from Jeddah and broadly follows the south-west coast of the country before crossing the border into Jordan south of Aqaba. After a detour into Wadi Rum, you return to the Jordan Depression and drive north along the coast of the Dead Sea. About 40 km north of Amman is Gerasa located, once part of the Decapolis, an important part of the Roman province in the first century BC. Finally, you circumnavigate Amman to get to the airport south of the city.

Saudi Arabia - a country full of secrets, reserved and closed to the West, a country about which you only know things that you find in the press. Apart from the employees of international companies and the migrant workers, the country primarily kept its gates open to Muslim pilgrims only. But that's about to change - and we're part of it!

Jeddah, die bedeutendste Stadt an der Westküste, hat mich mit Größe und Hektik überrascht. Vielleicht, weil es gerade Freitagabend war und die Landbevölkerung der Umgebung an Wochenenden in die Stadt drängt, um zu feiern. Abgesehen davon bietet Jeddah die pittoreske Altstadt Al-Balad und die berühmte New Jeddah Corniche, um nur zwei der Sehenswürdigkeiten zu nennen. Gerne hätte ich noch mehr Zeit vor Ort verbracht.

Jeddah, the most important city on the west coast, surprised me with its size and bustle. Maybe because it's Friday night and residents of the surrounding countryside flock to the city on weekends to party. Apart from that, Jeddah offers the picturesque old town of Al-Balad and the famous New Jeddah Corniche, just to name two of the attractions. I would have loved to have spent more time there.

Schon beim Planen und Erarbeiten der täglichen Routen wurde klar, dass sich die Tour die meiste Zeit im langgestreckten Asir-Gebirge, welches von Jordanien entlang der Küste des Roten Meeres bis an das Südende Jemens verläuft und die östliche Riftschulter des Grabenbruchs bildet, bewegt. Die Wirklichkeit übertraf meine Vorstellungen bei weitem. Kaum 30 Kilometer von der Küste entfernt, findet man sich im Bergland wieder. Steil aufragende Felswände und atemberaubende Straßen führen über eine relativ kurze Distanz in eine Höhe von über 2000 Meter. Al-Baha, der Hauptort der Region, liegt auf 2112 m Seehöhe und ist der südlichste Punkt unserer Reise.

Already when planning and working out the daily routes, it became clear that the tour moves most of the time in the elongated Asir Mountains, which run from Jordan along the coast of the Red Sea to the southern end of Yemen and form the eastern rift shoulder of the rift valley. The reality exceeded my imagination by far. Barely 30 kilometers from the coast, you find yourself in the mountains. Towering cliffs and breathtaking roads lead to a height of over 2000 meters over a relatively short distance. Al-Baha, the main town of the region, is at 2112 m above sea level and is the southernmost point of our journey.

Drei Tage später, auf Straßen mit atemberaubenden Aussichtspunkten unterwegs, Mekka als “Verbotszone” für Nicht-Muslime war erfolgreich umfahren, erreichte ich wieder die Küste. King Abdullah Economic City, kurz KAEC genannt, zeugt von der intensiven Planungstätigkeit im Land. Auf dem Reißbrett geplant und zum Teil fertiggestellt, wird es einer der Hotspots entlang der Küste werden. 

Weiter Richtung Norden ging es ab Yanbu wieder ins Gebirge, wesentlich niedriger als noch vor wenigen Tagen. Dafür wird in diesem Abschnitt der Einfluss der Großen Wüste spür- und sichtbar. Zwischen verwitterten Resten von Gebirgszügen machen sich Sandflächen breit, in den Wadis breiten sich die Palmgärten der Oasen aus.

Three days later, on roads with breathtaking viewpoints, having successfully bypassed Mecca as a “prohibited zone” for non-Muslims, I reached the coast again. King Abdullah Economic City, KAEC for short, bears witness to the intensive planning activity in the country. Planned on the drawing board and partially completed, it will become one of the hotspots along the coast.

Further north from Yanbu we headed back into the mountains, which were much lower than a few days ago. On the other hand, the influence of the Great Desert becomes noticeable and visible in this section. Between the weathered remains of mountain ranges, sandy areas spread, in the wadis the palm gardens of the oases stretch.

Schließlich gelangte ich nach Al’ Ula. Mein erster Weg führte auf den Harrat Viewpoint. Der Ausblick auf die Oase, auf die vielfältigen, in den unterschiedlichsten Rottönen gefärbten Gesteinsformationen und auf die dahinter  beginnende Wüste rauben einem beinahe den Atem. Die nahe gelegene Ausgrabungsstätte Mada’in Salih beherbergt über 100 während der nabatäischen Epoche entstandenen Felsengräber, die aus der Zeit vom ersten vorchristlichen bis zum ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhundert stammen. Der Fundplatz wurde 2008 für seine nabatäischen Kulturgüter von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erhoben.

Finally I got to Al' Ula. My first way led me to the Harrat Viewpoint. The view of the oasis, of the diverse rock formations colored in the most varied of red tones and of the desert beginning behind them, almost takes your breath away. The nearby Mada'in Salih archaeological site contains over 100 rock-cut tombs dating from the 1st BC to the 1st century AD, dating from the Nabataean period. The site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008 for its Nabataean cultural assets.

Zwei Tage später überquerte ich die Grenze nach Jordanien. Die Vorfreude, Orte wie Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Petra, Kerak, das Tote Meer wieder zu besuchen, war groß. Nach einer Orientierungsrunde durch Aqaba verliess ich die Stadt in Richtung Wadi Rum. Der Desert Highway führte mich rasch Richtung Norden, die Abzweigung zum Wadi Rum ist bald erreicht. Zufällig lernte ich beim Visitors Center den richtigen Mann für meine vielen Fragen kennen. Yasir, zu Hause im Wadi und ein Mitarbeiter des Besucherzentrums kennt das 1998 unter Schutz gestellte Gebiet wie seine Westentasche. Mit seiner Hilfe war es mir möglich, die Camps im Wadi zu besuchen.

Two days later I crossed the border to Jordan. The anticipation of visiting places like Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Petra, Kerak, the Dead Sea again was big. After an orientation loop through Aqaba, I left the city and headed towards Wadi Rum. The Desert Highway took me quickly north, the turnoff to Wadi Rum was reached soon. I happened to meet the right man at the Visitors Center who could answer my many questions. Yasir, at home in the wadi and a visitor center employee, knows the area, which was placed under protection in 1998, like the back of his hand. With his help I was able to visit the camps in the Wadi.

Der nächste Stopp auf der Reise war Petra, bekannt für seine Felsengräber. Unbeschreiblich ist das Gefühl, wenn sich, nachdem man die Schlucht durchwandert hat, sich diese weitet und den Blick auf das Schatzhaus freigibt. Auf der Tour werden wir hier einen weiteren Rasttag einlegen, damit jeder genügend Zeit hat, diese seit 1985 zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe gehörige Ausgrabung ausgiebig zu besuchen.

The next stop on the journey was Petra, known for its rock tombs. The feeling is indescribable when, after walking through the gorge, it widens and reveals the view of the treasure house. We will stop here on the tour for an extra day, so that everyone has enough time to visit the site extensively. Since 1985 the place has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Auf dem Weg Richtung Norden verliess ich den Höhenrücken und durch ein langgezogenes Wadi kletterte ich Höhenmeter um Höhenmeter hinab zum niedrigsten Punkt der Erde auf trockenem Land, an die Küste des Toten Meeres, ca. 430 m unter dem Meeresspiegel.

Ungefähr 40 km nördlich von Amman besuchen wir Jerash, zur Zeit der römischen Herrschaft eine der bedeutendsten Städte der Region. Die gut erhaltenen Gebäude und Ausgrabungen entwickelten sich zu einem Touristenmagneten der speziellen Art.

Südlich von Amman, in der Nähe des Flughafens findet unsere Reise ein Ende.

On the way north I left the ridge and through a long wadi I climbed meter by meter down to the lowest point on earth on dry land, on the coast of the Dead Sea, approx. 430 m below sea level.

About 40 km north of Amman we visit Jerash, one of the most important cities in the region during Roman rule. The well-preserved buildings and excavations developed into a tourist magnet of a special kind.

Our journey comes to an end south of Amman, near the airport.

Was habe ich persönlich von dieser Reise mitgenommen? Es ist spannend, mit Saudi-Arabien ein Land zu bereisen, das sich gerade der westlichen Welt öffnet. Und in Jordanienes ist immer noch überwältigend Petra, Wadi Rum und andere Sehenswürdigkeiten, die von Bildern vertraut sind und wo man immer schon einmal hin wollte, zu besuchen. Die Einheimischen sind freundlich und hilfsbereit - vorausgesetzt man hat es nicht eilig. Denn ein arabisches Sprichwort besagt:

“Als Allah die Welt erschuf, erschuf er auch die Zeit - und davon reichlich”

What did I personally take away from this trip? It is exciting to travel to a country that is opening up to the western world. And in Jordan it's still overwhelming to visit Petra, Wadi Rum and other sights that are familiar from pictures and where you've always wanted to go.The locals are friendly and helpful - provided you're not in a hurry. An Arabic proverb says:

“When Allah created the world, he also created time - and he created plenty of it”
