Welcome to Kunming on our Mystery Tour

Welcome to our Mystery Ride 2024!

And welcome to our guests Gaby, Eva and Johannes, Gerda and Stefan from Austria, Emmanuelle and Philippe from Belgium, Georgia and Peter from the US, Ricardo and Mauricio from Chile, Thorsten, Jörg-Peter, Helmut, Ulrich and Günter from Germany, John from the US and Alex from Canada: Welcome to this tour and to China, the country of superlatives by all means!

Mystery… because Rainer only, our CEO, knows what we will discover together during the next sixteen days.

Gathering the bikes for our tour, quite impressive!
Having a walk through the old quarter, lots of things to see...
And here getting a glimpse about differences in our world: a fleet of rental e-bikes..
Our first dinner...a last taste of the western world before everything will get different

Kunming the 2nd

Today we had to organize a lot of things, one was to obtain a chinese driving license. Oh yes, after all this years again..

an interesting process started...how about your eye sight??
for the eye test one had to squat down, doing some hand performance and and and...
waiting also a part of it...
and finally getting it! Well done. Yiehaaa!
...a well owned lunch at a sopisticated-wow-place: The name of the food? Noodles over the bridge. Amazing name and amazingly yummy!
Georgia and Peter in anticipation..
..and Helmut at the Green Lake in the Spring City.
...and a stroll around the lake brought us to...
to a small teahouse for our or I should say, Rainers welcome briefing
with a tea celebration..
..well done! I mean, Rainer with his speech and me as a flipchart holder
Getting back to the hotel on individual ways..
At the hotel still some work waiting..
...and fun as well, slowly the young crowd gathering..
..with Uli
..and John and Athur...+ we had to take pictures of them with their smart watches
Mauricio approaching our dinner in a nice local restaurant...

Kunming - Mi'Le

Half way out of busy Kunming Rainer briefing the further routing
Emmanuelle and Philippe enjoy our first riding day in China!
...the landscape around us now more enchanting for the next couple of hours
"Farmer" John having fun in or with the woods
Gaby posing in the stone forest, an old limestone area which we explore on foot
Gerda in between the rocks..
..Uli
Emmanuelle and Philippe, Eva and Johannes..
..with Stefan
Rainer & Gaby starting from our fuel stop
Cool!
...in the middle of nowhere we arrive all of a sudden in a fantasy world
...real?
Georgia, Peter and John enjoying a sundowner in our beautiful hotel

We had an impressive first riding day in Yunnan!

Mi'Le - Jianshui

Today a bit of a challenging day ahead of us, 250km "only" ahead of us, but roads are challenging. Welcome to China! Since it is a mystery tour I am not allowed to say more

Morning briefing with Rainer at our amazing hotel
Cruising through the mountains, everything smooth and all of sudden we are stopped in a road construction work...
Our friends start already exploring the nature...
Later amazing landscape around us
The cute employees of this gas station facinated about the gweilos entering their shop..
What Torsten and I didn't know that half an hour before they did this foto
At the cave...what the name of this cave is...it is a secret of course..Günter holding the foundation of the temple
Something must be down there, for sure!
The signs stating the climbers climbing up here, a once in a year competion!
Philippe getting the best shot
..moving inside
..and arriving in Pamukkale..
our lovely hotel for tonite quite different from last night!
On the streets of Jianshui, a tranquillo and charming city.
Good night everyone!

Jianshui - Honghe Hani Rice Terraces

In the morning we visited the Shuanglong Bridge, some parts from the 18th century built under Emperor Qianlong
our non-smokers posing
and our relaxed cigar smokers...
A beautiful ride today on nice mountain roads firstly going down around 1.600 m and after climbing another 1.800 m. Here we reach the Honghe Hani rice terraces, 160 square kilometers of human art work in symbiosis with nature!
Having a sundowner outside of our lovely guesthouse..
..a water buffalo passing by...
Our guesthouse for tonite right in the middle of the rice terraces!
A view from our rooms..

Honghe Hani Rice Terraces - Pu'er

In the morning we get back from our cute guesthouse to our bike parking where three buses of students from Yunnan await us...

...and the picture taking takes its course - on both sides
Alex enjoying the scene..

In the cool morning breeze we ride down from the Hani rice terraces to the Red River, we hop a couple of valleys partially with the help of some highway stretches, about 400 km to be covered today! Doesn't sound much to you come to China

In the hills of the Pu'er region, THE tea region, we stay in a nice resort right in the middle of tea terraces...

Pu'er - Jinggu

This morning we visit Nakeli, a village just north of Pu'er, which is one of the most beautiful and authentic villages along the Tea Horse Road, one of only four villages in all of Yunnan to be inscribed in the prestigious list of the "Most Beautiful Chinese Villages for Leisure". More than a 1.000 years ago trading tea from Pu'er for horses from Tibet started in this region...

...all about tea...
...and good coffee
Emmanuelle...
..Eva and Johannes..
..with the special attraction here
Gaby and Rainer..
Lin and Mauricio at the bikes..now we get ready for our nice ride, first following a river valley then slowly climbing in elevation in a more remote area and finally...
...reaching Mars as Rainer said in his morning briefing. Amazing China.
And the Wa (an ethnic group up here) performing a nice welcome serenade - and the music style absolutely different from what you would expect in China
...on Mars
Peter and Mauricio...
...at our Barbeque tonite
A lovely evening...

Jinggu - Fengqing

The morning ride from our remote place follows the valley out between two mountain ranges. Beautiful small scale agriculture beside the winding road. Later we climb a pass of 2.200m on a nice twisty road through the forest. We are close to the Myanmar border now. On our way some more tea plantations until we reach Fengqing.

A last view of our infinty pool..
A stop in a village along the road...This lady had so much fun with us, here Gaby...
...with Mauricio..
..and Emmanuelle
Eva at her bike
And the crowd looking for mushrooms (how they grow them here)

Fengqing - Tengchong

A beautiful ride lies ahead of us today. Leaving Fengqing, we cross a couple of 2.000m passes. The mountains around us are getting higher. The river that flows alongside the Gaoligong Shan mountain chain is the Nujiang, one of the three biggest rivers coming down from the Tibetan highlands.

In fornt of our breakfast location...WHO is now Helmut?!
The morning briefing before we take off..
Our well earned lunch spot at the Nujiang, the angry river...but today nice to us!
Actually also known as the Saluen, this river builds the border between Thailand and Myanmar in the Northern part and empties after its long travel into the Indian Ocean.
Uli taking a rest..
...passing by our first checkpoint, now we are very close to Myanmar
We reached our destination for tonite...
What a beautiful location for the next two nights!
our clients enjoying a sundowner

Tengchong Restday

Today is our restday and some decided to do so in our great relaxing location outside of Tengchong. Others were keen on discovering the area around and that was a very beautiful ride!

Passing some wetlands in the beginning, then on a windy narrow road following the Black River and passing a smaller volcano...Later, after an exceptional lunch in a BMW event location, we rode a small twisty mountain road through the thermal springs national park and popped out on the touristy side looking into the quite astonished faces of Chinese bus tour members..)

A warm welcome at the BMW event location...
they performed a dance show for us..
and after lunch we visit the temple close by
What a nice day today! Now we have to find our dinner location for tonite...one of these mystery games of Rainer. Let's see

Tengchong - Fugong

A long ride lies ahead of us today and we take a stretch on the highway in the morning. After we follow the Nujiang North, changing the side sometimes and the Gaoligong mountains around us are getting steeper and higher, the scenery is gorgeous! In this valley the majority is the ethnic population, most of them belonging to the Lisu, Bai and Nu...

Rainers morning briefing in our nice guesthouse...
A relaxed coffee stop in the morning (yes, coffee!)...however it starts raining outside
Peter found this small dog..
...y el cartel trabaja..
good lunch on the way (by the way, not easy to find)!
A stop at the Nujiang..
some picture taking with locals..
Ricardo with his new bike
Rainer with Emmanuelle and Philippe above the clouds at our gorgous location for tonite
..the view out of the windows, just amazing
A cute sing and dance show performed by the hotel personal belonging to the Nu tribe
Later another show, Philippe, Günter and John dancing!
What a beautiful day!

Fugong - Deqin

In the early morning we ride down from "our" mountain and meet the river Nujiang again. Here we continue our quest north, still inside the mighty canyon of the Nujiang. The mountains
to our left and right are becoming higher and higher, soon reaching 4.000 Meters or more.
Just a few miles to the west is the border with Myanmar, but there is no road to the other
side. This is a very remote area.

Then we climb up a pass of 3.500m asl, firstly in a nice forest, later steeper and steeper until we reach the top, snow around us. A dramatic change of the landscape on the other side coming down through many curves to the Lancang river (more known as the Mekong) which we follow North.

Still in our hotel above the clouds..
...and down again in the amazing Nujiang valley
climbing up our 3.500m pass, the snow is pretty close
Mauricio mega-happy!
Chinese tourist picture taking show..
Bikers greeting, the other on MTB up here!
Meeting the Lancang!
And yes, Tibet is close now!
The snow covered peaks of the Meili Snow Mountain range opposite our hotel for tonite
What a day, a long beautiful ride with a lot of different impressions!

Denqin - Shangri La

The ride today will bring us to Shangri La and we have to say goodbye to the Meili Snow mountains. A lot of curves today and we will try to take another spectacular road over a high pass with 4.320m elevation. After riding down we will meet the 3rd of the three mighty rivers flowing down from Tibet, the Jinshajiang or better known as the Jangtze. We follow the Jangtze as it rushes through its deep gorge but not following the whole way of more than 6.000km until it empties at Shanghai . Our target for today is Zhongdian or better known as Shangri La, as it was renamed back in 2001.

In the morning another shot of one of the 14 peaks of the Meili Snow mountains..
Helmut and Philippe waiting for what will happen...
Ah yes of course the briefing!
Checking the way...and a clear NO to our plan to tackle the old mountain road. Okay, then we do different..
As a reward a vulture above us making its turns (not targeting us
...more views of the mountains around us..
...enjoying the moment
On our way down to a Tibetean monastery
The mantras of the monks accompany us entering this holy place...
amazing art work!
Alex donating... motivating me doing the same for a good karma...
The big Jinshia bend...
and here we are!
Rainer and Gaby enjoying the moment..
Following now the Jinshia through its canyon on a small twisty road to...
..lunchstop!
Our hotel in Shangri La, so beautiful
And a boot beer as a surprise, Cheers Rainer!
Peter, Mauricio and Ricardo
Walking through the alleys of Shangri La
THE prayer wheel, maybe the biggest in the world, about 20m high!
a relaxed sundowner outside of the restaurant...
our cute dinner place..
Emmanuelle and Eva in anticipation...
...and the party starts
A very nice evening!

Shangri La - Lijiang

Today will be super nice riding day! Even though we will not visit the Pudacuo national park itself its surrounding landscape with its snow capped mountains, blue lakes, some rural settlements, wetlands changing with meadows sprinkled with grazing Yaks and horses is just great for enjoying on the motorcycle. After reaching again 3.700m of height we will drop down around 2.000m on winding roads in order to reach the Tiger Leaping Gorge, as the legend says that once upon a time a tiger jumped over the Jangtze exactly here. Later we gain elevation again on a small twisty country road and pass the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains on our way to Lijiang. What a ride!

..here we are close to the Tiger Leaping Gorge
The gorge is about 16 kilometers long and the
elevation difference between the Jangtze and the
snow-covered peaks of the Haba Shan is about
3.900 meters!
Georgia making her way through the steep canyon
Thorsten waiting for a good shot..
a first glimpse of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains
Arrival in our beautiful hotel in Lijiang
..and off they are
group gathering in the great lobby

Lijiang restday

Lijiang is Yunnan's pride and joy. UNESCO World Heritage site, a city of music, flowers, water channels, and 300 bridges - with unique architecture. In addition, clear air, a mild climate, lush vegetation, and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain making it a picture postcard.

..some action for the men, reflecting the route through Yunnan
..and some action for the ladies, chinese style
strolling around in Lijiang's alleys
our nice dinner...
develops while following Rainer through the alleys of the old town..
...into a party night
What a fun day!!

Lijiang - Dali

First we have to get out of busy Lijiang, then we hit a twisty road brings us to the small, ancient trading town of Shaxi, part of the former Tea Horse Road. Another twisty road, this one even smaller than the one before, leads us back across the mountain range and offers sweeping views of the valley we're about to descend into. Soon, Erhai Lake comes into view and announces our arrival in Dali which is our final destination of our Mystery tour!

We say goodbye to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains in our hotel lobby..
...moving around in Shaxi
..and a relaxed coffee stop on our way down to Erhai lake
Our farewell dinner in the old town of Dali
Rainer distributing presents
everyone having fun!

Another beautiful day comes to an end and our tour as well. Thank you very much for your participation in this Mystery Tour through Yunnan!
