1TB - Worldtour from Tallinn to Bangkok

Wednesday, November 15, 2017 | Marc Adamiak | The World Tour / Asia

Somewhere between Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng (Laos)

To see the next worldtour section, follow this link to the Bangkok-to-Bali blog:

https://www.edelweissbike.com/de/blog/?p=33183

November, 4th: Final leg - Khon Kaen to Bangkok

"Race to Bangkok, part 2"

Early breakfast and start at 6:30 a.m., 19 celsius
Again: long, straight roads (almost like interstates)...
Gas stations were not just welcome for fueling up, but also to have a water and a refreshing (short) break in the airconditionned 7eleven...
...before continuing in the heat (28 degrees) again.

See the "interesting" cabling...!
Short break in the shade at some market stalls at the roadside
Arrival at our hotel in Bangkok.
Holger is waving the flag for us.
Peter meets his new tourguide Holger (on the left), who will guide him from here to Bali...
...and saying goodbye to the "old one" (Marc, on the right)!

November, 3rd: Vientiane (Laos) - Khon Kaen (Thailand)

"Race to Bangkok, part 1"

Border crossing Laos-Thailand
9 a.m.: 27 Celsius
Yes, we are really in Thailand (with the bikes!)!!!

Here: Peter and Marc meeting our thai guide Mo.

11:30, 31 Celsius
Long, straight roads.
In cities, traffic and at redlights/roadworks, the temperature goes up to 36 Celsius.

Refreshment break at the roadside and a quick snack
In the hotel in Khon Kaen: pool and...
...a "water-ceremony-dinner-bbq-...-thing"...
...and ..and live music. Nice.
But not for too long - tomorrow, we still have 455km to Bangkok.
Heat during the day, but also in the mega city and highly dense traffic are waiting for us in Bangkok.
Start: 6:30 - when it is still "chilly"...

October, 31st to November, 2nd: Vientiane

Sunset at the Mekong river in Vientiane.
The shore across the river is Thailand - where we should enter the next morning...
...should...!

Due to thai authorities and bureaucracy, laws and (made up) regulations, we were not able to enter Thailand.
Not on the 31st, not on the 1st - not on the 2nd...!
As Royce, Jörg, Willi and Bernd have flights on the 4th and 5th from Bangkok, and we were running out of time (still 2 riding days down to Bangkok - in a "straight line"...!), the 4 shipped their bikes back home from Vientiane...
...on the 1st of november, we had a last dinner with the complete group (farewell dinner) and the 4 took a flight to Bangkok, the next morning.
This way, they had at least some quality time in Bangkok/Thailand.

It was a pleasure, riding with you, gentlemen! Thanks!
After another day of waiting for the vehicle permit for Thailand, and at least getting a service for the tourguide bike and Peters bike (which both continue on the next section Bangkok-Bali)...
...we finally got the paper on the 2nd in the evening!

October, 30th: Vang Vieng - Vientiane

Those little shrines for blessed hope, one can see very often, over here.
Our vehicles are ready for departure...
Stop at a local fish market.
...didnt we just see that vehicle at the fish market?! Racer!
After our adventures in Kyrgyzstan and China...
...not really a challenge!
Nice view on some islands in a reservoir.
Lunch stop in the heat of Laos, on the way to Vientiane.
Since we entered Laos, the temperatures are like 22-25 at 9 a.m. and 30 at lunch. In the evening, after 7 p.m., they drop to 20-25 (Celsius).

October, 29th: Luang Prabang - Vang Vieng

Looking forward to another awesome (riding) day, we said good-bye to the gardener in our Luang Prabang hotel and started to...
...a short boat trip...
...which took us to some beautiful waterfalls...
...in the elephant region...
...where the guys had some good fun!
Ancient watermill (for rice)
After riding the elephants, we took our bikes again and "got lost" in the beauty of nature around us and the road ahead...
Hmmmm - must be some sort of music instrument.
Lunchstop at a viewpoint with restaurant...
...and a wonderful view (actually) at the surrounding mountains - unfortunately, it was quite hazy!
On the descent, the sight got (a bit) better.
Not sure, who won this soccer game...
(Waterbuffalos)
Nice view from our hotel in Vang Vieng

October, 27th and 28th: Oudomxay - Luang Prabang and Luang Prabang, rest day

Little "supermarket" in a small town, after we started into an amaaazing day!
Enjoy the pictures of beautiful nature and wonderful roads/curves...!
(just) one of many temples, that we will see now, until the end of this journey.
What a nice difference, to what we were used to for the last weeks:
Kids were more interested in nature, than in our motorcycles!
Oh, and in candies...
...simply breathtaking...!
Parking at our hotel in Luang Prabang, where we will have a wonderful restday:
But see for yourself...!
Luang Prabang, UNESCO world heritage:
Impressions
In a good mood:
group dinner in a french restaurant

October, 26th: Mengla, China - Oudomxay (Muang Xay), Laos

Yaayyyy, no rain today!!!
Chinese border/migration to Laos
Money exchange
Always check your change - "by accident", it could be less than expected...!
The whole group says "Leo and Liu - Thanks for your great support and company!"
Approaching the lao immigration office
Laos welcomes us with sunshine, warm weather...
...good food (waiting for lunch)...
...interesting architecture...
...a lot of curves, greeeeeeen nature, nice people and good hotels.
Boot beer in the hotel yard in Oudomxay - together with Pong (our local guide) and Ole (the police man).

October, 25th: Jiangcheng - Mengla

A rainy day was in front of us - but temperatures between 16 and 20 degrees...
...Apparently, we were about to finally escape the winter, that was trying to catch up with us the past days and weeks!
Quite soon, we stopped at some...
...typical
wooden pole houses
Continuing along tea and banana plantations
Lunch stop at a quite remote place.
Zoom in and see, what Peter was carrying with him (at the same spot) for almost 3 days.
..not being able to lose it...
A neighbor: quite proud wood artist / carpenter
Riding in the jungle
Mengla - our last stop in China, before we cross into Laos, the next day.
Farewell dinner (hot pot) for China, Liu and Leo.

October, 23rd and 24th: Kunming - Jianshui - Jiangcheng

October, 23rd:
Nice view in our hotel in Kunming - would have been even better without rain...!
...and as it was raining all day long...
...we decided at lunch, to take the interstate to Jianshui.
Jianshui, old town at night - impressions...
The next morning, October, 24th.

Palmtrees in front of our Jianshui hotel - yeah...
But guess what: riiight... pouring rain!
Even this fly (big wooden sculpture) was looking very surprised...
...oh - sorry!
It's an elephant...!
Change of plan: the first half of today's route, we took the highway...
...then we continued into and through the jungle(-ish) area of southern China.
Here: lunch stop in a little village.
Fresh Maracuja - awesome!
Seems, as if someone had a big party...!
Rain became (a bit) less, so we could take some pictures of the nice road, following this river...
...a (fish) farm...
...major landslide(s), that (luckily) were cleared, before we crossed that spot...
...and a lot of banana plantations.
Jiangcheng.
Not just here, but in all of China, shirts with english texts are very modern - even if the people do not (always) speak/understand english...!

October, 21st and 22nd: Lijiang - Dali - Kunming

October, 21st - Lijiang to Dali:
We had a stop at a temple, that was at the roadside...
...with a beautiful view into the valley...
...and onto the road, we gonna continue riding.
After another short stop,...
...passing a local market...
...and a police control (I think, they just wanted to shoot some pictures )...
...we just stopped once more for a quick bike wash - and made it to our destination, before the rain started.
In Dali, we went for a little walk in the old town...
...saw a famous american restaurant...
...lots of national and international tourists...
..."strange" coconuts...
...weird shops...
...interesting ice cream - and much more...!
As the rain started again, we had some drinks and went back to our hotel.
October, 22nd - Dali to Kunming:
The day started rainy, but the road led us through nice landscapes...
...just:
The rain became more and more heavy, we couldn't enjoy any longer - neither road, nor landscapes...
So we decided, to take the highway and head to our hotel in Kunming as quick as possible!
Finally, in our rooms, we...
...enjoyed a hot shower - and...
...and finished the day with an excellent Edelweiss dinner in the hotel restaurant.

October, 20th: Lijiang, rest day

Our luxurious Intercontinental hotel in Lijiang

October, 17th to 19th: Chengdu - Shimian - Miyi - Lijiang

October, 17th: leaving Chengdu...
...we first got rid of some dirt, we "collected" two days before.
Lunch break in Ya'an
As "our restaurant" at the promenade was closed...
...we were looking for another option...
...voila: choose one!
After a warm start with 18, we came to some fog in the panda area...
...and 5 degrees on the peak (2400m).
Descending towards Shimian, it got warmer again (18 celsius) and we crossed a region, where they plant different sorts of fruits (i.e. sweet cherries)...
...and have their "own style of breakdown service"
Riding in the beautiful scenery of Dadu river...
...which more looks like a huge lake.
October, 18th: Our route to Miyi took us along the national road, with partly interesting views on the (parallel) highway...
...but unfortunately, "reality" (the 2 circles from the gps picture above) was hiding in the fog - which we had to cross in cold temperatures again (5 degrees)...
...and were happy, to have a quick break with clear sight and 18 celsius again!
Some regions (or even just villages/towns) seem to be specialized (or famous) for something (tea, rice, fruits,...); this one - apparently - for fireworks (sold at the roadside).

...no, Gerhard - we did not buy it, in order to forget it in the van and causing problems at custom clearance...!
The afternoon spoiled us with great spots, sun and up to 27 degrees...!
Arriving in Miyi, ...
...I found this in the shower...
I do not want to slide there - not even carefully!
October, 19th: Miyi to Lijiang...
Two rivers coming together (green and brown)
Beautiful roads in the morning - good to ride!
"Swiss pride":
...we had that last year already... So, there must be some truth in it...!
Crossing a region with huge Mango plantations, we were looking forward for lunch...
...but... nonoNO!
Due to road constructions, the way was blocked until 7 in the evening!
Some thoughts and talks and more details later,...
...we decided, to give it a try (just with the motorcycles)...
...and left the finished road after some kilometers (right before the actual roadworks)...
...for a little detour (shown by a very nice farmer), following small paths in the fields...
...to get back on track, right after the construction site - and enjoy the breathtaking sights again (here: rice terraces)!
After the descent into this wonderful valley...
...we followed the winding road through this awesome...
...and spectacular scenic canyon...
...but always very carefully and also focussed on the surface (this road is NOT wet! But it might be slippery, as if wet...)!
We crossed Yangtze river...
...and climbed up for a last time today (to 2200m), before...
...eating and walkin in the ancient village of Lijiang in the evening.

October, 13th to 16th: Xi'An - Foping - Guangyuan - Chengdu and Chengdu rest day

The start in Xi'An was great!
Jörg got his new front fender...
...Royce's bike got the new suspension...
...Bernd's bike got new tires...
...Willi got a new cell phone...
...Marc's bike got new fork sealings...

...so...Peter got an almost new group...!
Even though, it was cloudy and a bit fresh - we could enjoy curves and wonderful nature again...
...shoot some nice photos...
...or buy some local fruits/nuts.
After a nice ride...
...a good lunch...
...more curves (but on wet roads and partly in fog)...
...we finished the day in Foping with a delicious hot pot Edelweiss dinner!
October, 14th: we continued our journey to Guangyuan
Everybody was prepared for rain.
It remained dry and with 18 celsius, it was a good weather to ride...
After lunch, a liiittle surprise was waiting for us...
...the "mud games" started again...
...but just for 20km - and the deep potholes, water and all the rest were "nothing", compared to the last time!
Back on asphalt, we had to take an alternative route (because of land slides) - and really enjoyed it very much (also some chinese-english translations: zoom in *hahaha*)!
Didn't we just start with clean bikes...?!?
Always keep your eyes open - aaaaall day long!
Passing, turning around... we HAD to stop...
...at this "hidden treasure" at the roadside!
At night fall, we arrived at the hotel and first enjoyed our "boot beer"!
...Liu, Leo and Marc went out for some street food.
October, 15th - the next morning: view from the hotel room over Guangyuan.
Ready to start towards Chengdu.
Dry and 14 celsius - even if it looks different on this picture.
Picture stop on a little detour...
"Almost looks like the Dolomites" (Bernd)
Between the last picture and here, it was all about enjoying dry roads, curves, curves, curves -
a lot of riding fun!

The general, who defended this pass with a little number of soldiers successfully (almost 2000 years ago)!
The cedar trees along (and growing INTO) the road are planted (and not removed) for his hohour.
A wonderful view...
...from this tower.
Arrival at the Chengdu hotel.
We saw our first panda bears!
(Nooo - just stuffed animals in the lobby... !)
But now, seriously:
October, 16th (Chengdu rest day):
Royce, Willi, Jörg and Peter went to the Panda reserve...
Worldwide, Panda bears are just borrowed and return back to China!

October, 11th and 12th: Xi'an rest days (2)

October, 11th: 7 Celsius and strong rain; Peter, Royce, Willi and Jörg are leaving to see...
...the terracotta army of emperor Chin (who gave China its name).
October, 12th: sunny and warm - but the smile on Royce's face is, because he got the spare suspension for his bike (and it can be fixed today, so that he can continue riding tomorrow - without bouncing like on a wild pony).
"Old Xi'an" city wall
"just a LITTLE beer" for dinner...!

October, 10th: Maiji to Xi'an (skipping Pingliang)

After cold temperatures and mud fights, the group decided to head directly to Xi'An on the highway - so that we can have an extra day for relaxing/recovering!
It was a good decision, because in the background, you can see snow on the hills...
...and slush on the road!
With 1.5 to 8 Celsius, it was cold again - just the tunnels warmed us a bit (in one of them, even up to 18 degrees!).
Leo made new friends at a coffee stop.
In Xi'An, we left the 3 Beamers at BMW, to get serviced.
Almost 9 million inhabitants at Xi'An...
...which is also reflected in traffic (insane "driving practices" not mentionned here...!).
At the muslim market at night
A guy, working with sugar (to candies)...
...hammering and condensing caramel.
Wrong world: fish eating humans (feet skin)... yummie!
(Almost) fully automated walnut dumpling production.
The illuminated bell tower.

October, 9th: Weiyuan to Maiji

The next morning...
...our bikes...
...before...
...the veeeery urgent car/bike wash...
...and after!
As if there were nothing, yesterday - but it was!
...so we took the highway, to get to our next hotel as quick as possible (especially, as the temperatures were just between 1 and 7 degrees!)!

October, 8th: Linxia to Gangu (no, to Weiyuan!)

It should have been a nice 300+ km ride, with crossing some beautiful villages...
...but after approx. 100km, road constructions started (with mud and clay, where they just "removed" the asphalt).
Here, we were told: "This will be like that - just for another 3, maximum 5 kilometers, then tarmac will be back again!"...
...uhhuuhhhh...
...SUUURE...!
NO! The 3-5km turned out to be 30-50 and the "getting better" ... well, you can see yourself...!
Also cars got stuck, were sliding and "swimming"...
...and with our bikes, this was not possible to cross at all!

So, we decided to load the bikes into the van, shuttle them about 5 km to where the asphalt really began (from where they could finish the last 20km to our lunch stop).

We started at 3 in the afternoon with the shutteling...
...even with 4wd, the van had to "fight" his way through the clay, mud, dirt,...
...especially, as rising humidity (fog) was making the situation (and the underground) worse and worse!
Loading, shutteling, unloading, driving (swimming) back, loading again, shutteling, etc etc... took us hours!
The last bikes were loaded in the dark already and when all finally arrived at our lunch stop (haha), it was 10 pm and we just had a quick dinner there, decided for an alternative hotel for the night and fell asleep - deadly tired...!

Instead of the initially planned distance, we just made 50% this day; but we made it!

October, 7th: Xining to Linxia

We started the day...
...with a visit of...
...the monastery of Ta'Er Si, near Xining
2 hours later, we continued...
...through wonderfully colored mountains...
...and well paved, winding roads took us...
...to astonishing places...
...and funny situations.
Being an attraction (again) at the lunch stop...
...we were even recorded by that drone!
In the afternoon, wonderful canyons...
...were waiting for us, as well as...
...these beautiful red rocks to the left and to our right!
We then crossed the yellow river for the first time...
...which is not so yellow here (yet - but later!).
The sun before and this red chili pepper were "hot" enough for this day - because...
...wehad to cross another pass...
...where temperature dropped from 18 to 5 degrees, the streets got wet n slippery and in the fog, we could partly see just 5 meters...!
As our hotel (what a mooonster building!) was a bit outside the city, we took a taxi and...
...had a nice Edelweiss group dinner downtown - in the "chinese version of a sushi circle", where you pick some ingredients and cook them in a pot in front of you (or is that the chinese version of swiss fondue?! ...).
Always funny for the locals (and I guess, also for Leo), how we "long noses" try to eat with chopsticks...

October, 5th and 6th: Jiayuguan to Sunan and then to Xining

Even if China is full of e-scooters nowadays...
...they still exist here: bicycles!
October, 5th: Start from our hotel in Jiayuguan
At the road, we saw a lot of those dried herb hills...
It turned out, that this was the natural sugar replacement: Stevia
A short break, even if the ride was just a bit more than 200km.
These mountains, we will cross tomorrow
Always and everywhere's something to see:
Not far from our today's destination, we crossed another...
...beautyful area...
...with perfect roads!
Entering Sunan.
We arrived quite early at the hotel.
Peter, Willi and Marc decided to go for a test ride and see, how the unpaved road for tomorrow looks.
This took us 4 hours - and the result, you will see together with the pictures of October 6th...
Modern and traditional calculator in a supermarket.
Yes, this is how a hotel can look from the outside...
...and...YES, this is, how a regular hotel room can look like (we believe, that Bernd got this special room, because he does this trip the 2nd time with Edelweiss... ...).
What exactly does this tell us in the bathroom...?!?
October, 6th, Bernd and Jörg took the paved road in the north...
...which was also super beautiful...
...while the rest of the team started the tour towards the non-paved bit over the mountain pass.
Sometimes, pictures say more than words...
Enjoy!
Some water, snow and ice on/along the road - but not critical!
Royce at the (mountain) saddle in almost 4.200m
Backto asphalt, Peter was re-inflating his tires.
These people were preparing grass seed
Isn't nature breathtaking...
...even with blue sheep...?!
...errrr... wait a second... WHAT?!?!?!?

...aahhh, okay - they are marked, to be distinguished from other herds...!
(but does the entire sheep then have to be "painted"?!?)
Due to the (still enduring) 8-day national holiday, there was sort of a party on this mountain pass - and immensely overcrowded!
Almost at our destination, we saw this tower with prayer's wheels at a junction (next to a gas station and a truck stop) - idyllic...

October, 4th: Dunhuang to Jiayuguan

On our way to Jiayuguan, we met some (east) chinese riders during a break
In the afternoon, we started our cultural program:
first visiting an old fortress...
Two men playing chinese chess.
...and then...
...a western part of the great wall (which is made of clay here)
Royce, Willi and Peter started their "long way up"...
The beginning is quite harmless...
...but climbing the steep steps is a real workout!
After a beautiful day, we enjoyed some fantastic dinner in Jiayuguan downtown.

October, 3rd: Dunhuang rest day

Sand dunes, behind the hotel in Dunhuang in the morning.
Some of us visited the Mogao grottoes
...and later in the afternoon, the dunes
Due to an 8-day national holiday, all attractions are (over-)crowded!
We finished the day in Dunhuang with an Edelweiss dinner.

September, 28th to October, 2nd: Kashgar-Aksu-Korla-Turpan-Hami-Dunhuang

Finally, we got our driver's license..
...and "number plate (same size)...
...and we are...
...ready to start exploring China on our bikes for the next weeks.
First, it will be a long ride along the northern part of the Taklamakan desert
Approximately 2.300 km highway, until we head south east (after 4,5 days) to Dunhuang - and further.
Almost abandonned villages near the highway...
...will serve as lunch breaks.
Zoom in on the back of the vehicle
Coffee breaks are at gas stations and truck stops on those long days (maximum speed on highways here is 120 km/h).
Aksu hotel parking on september, 28th.
Mosque in Kuqa, on september 29th
Lunch break in Kuqa
All sorts of nuts, fruits...
...and a "restaurant" at a truck stop.
The highway was blocked for almost 2 hours for some important "transports" (?politician?)...
...which ended in a late hotel arrival in Korla.
Over 1.3 billion (german: 1,3 Milliarden) people in China - and this is, what the postal service looks like
(just kidding!)
September, 30th - on our way to Turpan, we stopped at a truck stop and those 2 guys...
...proudly presented their pumpkins, which they will later use as bottle/glass for... "drinks"
It' not just us, being curious and taking pictures - we are always an attraction!
The flat, straight (and boring) highway changed a bit...
...but in the "interesting" (curvy) part, we were just allowed to ride with 60 (yes, sixty!) km/h
The ride in the morning and later in the mountains was cold (10-16 degrees) and on the descend, we were happy for the late lunch break with warm 22 celsius.
Always a good sign, if the chef seems to like his own food...!
After a quite stormy afternoon ride, we skipped the "deepest point of China" and were happy, to finally arrive in our hotel!
Nice artificial lake behind the hotel.
Chinese high-tech: Leo, paying in a restaurant, by scanning the code with his mobile phone.
Chinese (high-) tech, part 2: In all cities, they really love colorful lights... everywhere...!
October, 1st - morning appeal at 9 a.m. with music and national flag.
We left the highway short after Turpan, for visiting the wonderful "flame mountains"
No-one wanted to climb the stairs, to finally slide back down again
Boil some eggs in the little sand hill (costs money, but nobody around...)!
The little detour also took us to the "1000 buddha cavey", where (unfortunately) taking pictures inside, was forbidden...
On the way back, some riding pictures in this wonderful landscape:
Peter
Jörg
Bernd
Royce
Willi
After that breathtaking morning, we had stormy wind again on our ride on the highway.
On THIS stop, Liu (our chinese van driver) was the "star" for some people from his city Chengdu (where we will be later on this trip).
...some nice, warm eggs...?! Thanks - but NO!
Two trucks collided...
...and caused a very long traffic jam - result: again a late arrival in our hotel...!
(Here: people are moving the melon boxes from the damaged truck on a new one)
In the hotel, the scale tried to tell my weight - BEFORE I stepped on it (wow).
For "longer sessions" in the bathroom, they offer an ashtray and the "good old cube" (who does still remember it?!)
October, 2nd: On our route from Hami to Dunhuang, we fought our way on the highway through strong winds again, until we reached the last 100 km on country road with (almost) no wind and higher temperatures again (started with 8 and here we enjoyed 19).
Peter and Willi buying some dried melons at a stall along the road.
Dunhuang hotel parking.
Foodstreet, Dunhuang night market

September, 27th: Kashgar (restday 2 of 2)

This morning, we went with our bikes to the registration for the chinese driver's license.
...and on the way back to the hotel, we made them beautiful again!
In the evening, we walked...
...to a restaurant, near by the hotel...
...had an excellent (and well deserved) Edelweiss dinner - and officially welcomed our chinese tourguide Leo (upper middle) and our van driver Liu (on the upper left).

September, 26th: Kashgar (restday 1 of 2)

Leo and Marc left the hotel at 9, drove back to customs, to finish the procedure (in "just" 8 hours of waiting)...
...and queueing...
...for a local lunch.
The group, meanwhile,...
...had a little walk...
...downtown...
...where we also went...
...after getting all regulated, riding back, passport control, etc...
...to have some street food dinner at the night market...
...of (mostly) muslim Kashgar.

September, 25th: Sary Mogul to Kashgar (China)

Minus 4.5 Celsius at 7 a.m.
But first, a good n warm breakfast with coffee (or tea)!
A nice ride in the morning: on a well paved road between the valley and the snow-covered mountains.
At the kyrgysz border, we passed an almost 3km long truck queue and had just a little to wait, before "checking out" quite quickly.
...arriving at the chinese side at 1040; good timing (WE thought)...
...but then... thheeeeenn... we had to wait, n waaiit, n waaaaaiiiiiiittt - almost 5 hours later, we could cross the border (after luggage and 2nd passport check).
In a real hurry, we rode another 150 km to the customs, where we parked our vehicles over night, passed another passport and luggage check, entered a shuttle bus, had to show our passports again on the way of 80km to the hotel, where we arrived late and fell asleep immediately.

September, 24th: Osh to Sary Mogul

Our hotel in Osh, the next morning.

Unfortunately, we had to say good-bye to our russian guide and friend Alex, for whom the journey ended here.
A huge "thank you" and looking forward to the next time!

In 2 days, we will welcome our chinese guide (Leo), who then will accompany us for the coming 4 weeks.
Getting a tyre change on the van, before having a late start today (the distance was not too far).
Almost perfect roads, again took us...
...through unbelieveable beautiful landscapes...
...up into the mountains...
...where we...
...after climbing THIS...
...crossed the highest point of today, in almost 3.600 meters altitude.
It also seems to be a famous place for some nice wedding pictures (in strong wind and cold... but ok...)
We then...
...were "descending"...
...to the Alai valley...
...which is still in 3.000 meters of altitude.
Via Sary Tasch, we then reached our todays destination: Sary Mogul.
Impressions...:
Our guest house
WIFI...!!!
Our rooms...:

September, 23rd: Song Kul to Osh

Today, a quite long ride with approx. 300km gravel and 155km paved roads was waiting for us.
Out there, in the awesome nature...
...winding roads...
...and our bikes...
...we were almost alone - enjoying the ride...
...even if the track was not always easy to read...
...and took us to some... ..."interesting" places...!
After a short break with a beautiful view...
...challenging parts with gravel, and sand in the curves were waiting againg for us...
...so that we not just stopped, to enjoy nature, but also to have a little rest, before continuing.
Fueling up and...
...lunch break in Kazerman - a small town in the middle of nowhere.
After a cold start in the morning (-1 Celsius) and a "hot ride" until lunch (25+), the road took us up again over 3000m and...
...very strong wind let us feel the 15 degrees even colder.
Willi
Royce
Jörg
Peter
A herd, moving uphill the direct way - not taking the road
Finally, back on asphalt - thank god; even if it was fun today, it was super exhausting...
...not to speak of the remaining 150+km, that took us to Osh, but (as it seemed) through an "endless town" (Royce), so that we arrived quite late.

September, 22nd: Tamga to Song Kul

Ready for 2 challenging riding days, up to lake Song Kul
Leaving our nice huts in Tamga, we were looking forward to the Song Kul jurte camp.
The morning started with some paved kilometers
...with a stop at an abandonned resort/temple/...
...with some "strange" paintings (zoom in!)...
...and continuing to a jurte builder
As Bernd already saw, how jurtes are built, he gave some candies to local kids...
...while the oters were introduced to the craftsmanship
The jurtes are built...
...with quite simple methods and ...
...machinery...
...but more than just sufficient.
This wool fabric will keep us warm tonight, up in the cold plateau!
The road took us...
...to a little town, where we had...
...just a quick lunch break near a little bazar...
...before heading to the...
...last 80+ kilometers...
...of gravel, which lead us up into breathtaking sceneries...:
Lake Song Kul, after lake Titicaca in southamerica, the 2nd biggest high alpine lake.
As we arrived in our jurte camp, ...
...we (Alex) first had to fix Jörg's KTM, as it was leaking cooling liquid from a bolt, that was rattled loose.
Also the van had a flat tyre, that had to be exchanged and fixed.
After (successful) work, we went into the dinner jurte, to warm our cold hands...
...and to have...
...some delicious...
...dinner with stuffed paprika, bread and fish from Lake Song Kul.
Our "bathroom" and...
"sleeping rooms" for the night - up in over 3.000 meters.

September, 21st: Tamga rest day

Peter and Willi went for a little ride...
...and while the rest enjoyed sun, food, and preparing a little for tomorrow...
The two saw the red rocks of the "seven bulls"
...enjoyed nature there...
...and also had...
...their own little adventures.
In the evening, Peter, Bernd and Royce had some fun, playing table tennis.

September, 20th: Shonzhy to Tamga (Kyrgyzstan)

Ready to leave our hotel in Shonzhy, to cross the border (later) to Kyrgyzstan
A quick picture stop
Also Alex wants to "ride"
On the way to the border, we crossed a pass in 1850 meters with a wonderful view.
Even in sunshine, it was just 13 degrees "warm" up there.
After the border, we rode quite some kilometers on gravel and deserved a break
Riding in Kyrgystan is really fun
...and nature...
..."forces" us again and again to stop - in order to enjoy it even more and shoot some nice pictures.
Peter and...
...Willi. "It's a bit like in Switzerland"
Royce. "It's a bit like in Montana"
Marc
Changin money and getting a late lunch in Karakol - with warmer 22 Celsius
On the way to Tamga...
...we simply...
...HAD to stop for this nice view of the sun over lake Ysyk-Köl...
... the beautiful colored trees and the mountains (little bit covered with snow) in the background!
Sunset in our hotel (resort) at the lake

September, 19th: Almaty via Sharyn Canyon to Shonzhy

The motorcycle is fixed - a big thanks to our friends at Freerider in Almaty!!!
Leaving Almaty, with a beautiful view on the Tien Shan mountains
When the road ends...
...there might be options...
...but when we saw this guy (who got stuck), we decided for another route!
We found some nice curves...
...and finally left the vast flat lands.
Lunch break before we head to Sharyn Canyon.
People are always interested in or tour (drawn on the van).
Jörg, on the way to the canyon.
Bernd
A small entrance fee, some more meters - and we can see it...
...Sharyn Canyon!
Royce
Bernd
In their documentary, Ewan and Charly were allowed to ride down there.
Nowadays, it is forbidden.
Leaving the canyon.
Marc
Bernd
Van
Jörg
Willi
Peter
Royce
That was fun!
...also for the Van.
Wild horses
Sharyn river
Our hotel (resort)...
...with thermal water pool

September, 18th: Almaty rest day (2 of 2)

Service time: Tourguide bike
Peter and Jörg...
...following the van...
...to KTM Almaty.
Trash car
Countdown at traffic light(s)
School is over
Also the van got a little service (new break pads)
After a busy day, we went to the bar...
...IN THE HOTEL!!!!

September, 17th: Almaty rest day (1 of 2)

Impressions...
Cute (1)
Cute (2)

September, 16th: Balkhash to Almaty (Alma-Ata)

Starting from our hotel with 15 degrees...
...and sunshine!
These trains...
...incredibly looong!
Be alerted an stay focussed!
One of the bigger cemeteries along our route these days.
A lot of vast lands and "just horizon".
We saw our first "wild camels"
Already in Russia, we saw many old european trucks, that are still being used here.
The group...
...taking some pictures...
...of lake Balkhash in the morning sun.
Long straight roads and the horizon are waiting for us.
OK - sooome "curves" (here, crossing a little salt lake)
The van stopped at..
...one of the booths, selling fish...
...from lake Balkhash. Alex (our russian guide) chooses well...
...and is quite proud of the result!
It got warmer and warmer today. We stopped at a little restaurant "in the middle of nowhere" for a quick lunch.
A smaller graveyard/cemetery along the road.
That was it with the nice roads for the next 200+ kilometers.
At least, they fixed the potholes since last year, so that we could enjoy the unlimited view.
No! Not eating again - but a break had to be, to drink some water/tea/coffee and continue.
Royce improves his Kazakh, while the group prepares to leave.
Heeere they are!
A herd of wild camels (the REAL ones, this time!)
Fruit stalls along the road.
Mostly selling different sorts of melons (huge beasts!)
One has to be prepared for everything lying on, or crossing the streets: like these wild horses this time.
The straight road gets some curves again.
Landscape is changing a bit, while we slooowly come closer to Almaty.
Just a LITTLE taste of crazy asian traffic - but it works (somehow).
We are in a muslim region since and for quite some days.
First stop in Almaty, to get our bikes seviced...
...at our friends of freerider.
Finally in our hotel in Almaty - after 640+ km and 12 hours, since we started with breakfast at 7 a.m.

September, 15th: Karaganda to Balkhash

Leaving Karaganda in sunshine - makes everybody quite happy.
Stop at a memorial for the victims of the Karlag (which museum we visited yesterday in Dolinka).
...and right next to it on the other side of the road: this tank...
...and that soldier statue.
Welcome to the (mostly flat, but sometime a bit hilly) steppe of Kazakhstan.
Seemed to be a container hotel... hmmm.
If one thinks, there is not much to see in the steppe - or to stop for, to take pictures: wrooong!
It's not aaall flat.
Ok, mostly it is.
Long straight road, cutting through the wide land.
Sometimes "curvy and winding" to the horizon...
From time to time, we see such eye catchers...
...or that one (without ALWAYS knowing, what it is exactly).
A quite huge cemetery (in the background)...
...which Royce...
...and Jörg visited to get some nice pictures.
A lonely (hmmm... hill, mountain...ish "thing"
Lunch break in the heat...
...Jörg staying outside and enjoying the sun...
...while the others are waiting for a delicious dish...
...prepared by these nice...
...ladies.
Who needs a toilet?!?
...or an ashtray?
Modern TV inside the car - but old school outside.
Next stop. Behind this hut...
...sorry: behind THIS hut...
...some nice rock formation (after all the flat lands).
Entering Balkhash.
NOOOO!!! We need it at least for tonight! Please...
...and please do not exchange your bike with ours...
...while we enjoy dinner!

September, 14th: Astana to Karaganda

Astana in the morning (view from our hotel room on 13th floor). Sunshine - yeeaaahhhh!
A new built highway leads us south (with snow fences along).
"Our Olymp" to get some coffee (instant).
Weather good: check.
Road good: check.
Continue
On half way: an ugly industrial city
We will see much longer trains on this journey!
Initially, we wanted some dumplings (typical for this region), but the restaurant was closed.
But Peter, Willy...
as well as Royce - and the others, found something for a snack.
Left and right steered - you can find both here.
A local biker along our way.
Passing some factory...
...to the Karlag labor camp museum in Dolinka.
The camp was 200x300km (here compared to Kazakhstan).
Isolation cell.
Regular sleeping room in a barrack.
Example of a work room.
Willi, Peter, Royce, Marc, Bernd and Jörg in front of the museum.
Group +1
A new church/mosque/... on entering Karaganda.
Boot beer in the hotel.
Seems, she had a hard day!
Peter and "a sword" of delicious lamb Shashlik.
While there was a party going on at the first floor of our restaurant...
...we had our own!

September, 13th: Burabay to Astana

Royce, Jörg and Peter: (almost) ready to leave.
There must be order!
No rain, almost no wind and warmer temperatures: a last view on our hotel, before heading to some nice pictures in the natural reserve and to Astana.
Impressions..
...at the Burabay...
...lake area (Willi's Yamaha).
Peter's bike.
Jörg, filming us (or not? We never know ... )
Bernd
A happy Royce.
Sun comes out.
Nature is impressive.
This natural park with its lakes...
...and hills, woods and rocks...
(Bernd and Royce waiting)
...is exceptional in this area, because everything else around is flat and wide/vast steppe!
(Peter, Jörg and Willi taking pictures).
In high season, this place is quite touristy and crowded.
Jörg talking to a local.
The weather is nice again...
...while we continue on a highway...
...and after a short coffee stop...
...we reach the outskirts of Astana...
(big pipeline, "crossing" the street)
It does not look like the modern capital - yet...!
...but now, it does!!!
Some sellers at an intersection, close to the hotel.
Astana city center

September, 12th: Burabay "bridging day"

Weather changed to worse and we decided to stay one more night in Burabay.

Going out was not so nice - with rain, cold temperatures and strong wind.

Looking for a nice restaurant in town, we crossed these two kazakh statues.
The sign directs to some place - but the interesting part is: it shows the old name of the former capital of Kazakhstan : Almaty (where we will be in 5 days).
At THIS fence - DON'T do this - otherwise, THAT happens... (omg!)

September, 11th: Petropavlovsk to Burabay

Leaving Petropavlovsk in rain.
A first glimpse of the kazakh steppe and the long roads there.
A little "shop", selling honey.
Approaching the hills at Burabay.
Entering the national park.
Bikers "hunting" an athlete, "chasing" the van
We will definetely see more of this wonderful landscape at Burabay, when the weather is better again!

September, 10th: Kurgan to Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan)

Leaving our last hotel in Russia.
Truck race towards the border, to be first in the waiting queue.
Agricultural machinery at our coffee stop...
We were not alone - and the cute puppy was hungry...
Peter, Bernd, Royce and Willi enjoying the sun and some snacks.
Some harmless...
...road works on the way.
Beautiful swamp scenery along the route.
The people here love taking pictures of our big bikes - and they are impressed by our long journey.
Bernd
Willi
Peter
Royce
Jörg
We successfully left Russia (this here is between the borders)
Always an attraction...
...while waiting to cross the border into Kazakhstan.
The entry procedure.
After entering Kazakhstan, "just quickly" getting a kazakh insurance...
...should take not more than 15 minutes - but the "systems" were a bit slow and it took 1,5 hours...!
Zoom in and find our Edelweiss sticker
Escaping the thunderstorm.
Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan)
None of us really understood the sign at the traffic light (use sun glasses, maybe?!?).
Coming closer...
...to our first kazakh hotel (with a last small obstacle).

September, 9th: Yekaterinburg to Kurgan

Today, it was cold (8 Celsius), rainy all day long and windy. Nobody was really in the mood for stopping and taking pictures - just get a hot shower in the last hotel in Russia. Tomorrow, we cross the border to Kazakhstan.
The weather god had no mercy...!
We parked the bikes and were happy to get into the dry and warm hotel.
Modern switches - wow!

September, 8th: Yekaterinburg rest day

Impressions in the city
Peter
Looks good in the sun!
Bernd
View from our hotel room

September, 7th: Kungur to Yekaterinburg

As we started late, our stops were quite short, today: coffee.
What we see and will ride now...
... are the Ural mountains.
Lunch point

Wood arts: Russia
A first "little" continent border crossing
...and now "the big continent border crossing": from Europe...
...to Asia!
Thanks to Bernd for this picture!

Nice picture stop at a reservoir.
It is soooo doooood, to feel the warming sun!
Yeayyyy: a curve!
Lunch break...
...where we not just met the norwegian ski high jump team (on the way to its training camp in Chaikowsky) - but also this cool russian biker (left)...
...with his own version of a gps mount.
Gas and oil makes this region quite wealthy
Up and down smooth hills with slight curves.
Cruising through wide and beautiful landscapes
At our stop...
...we heard roaring, coming from those two trucks...
...actually from siberian tigers...
...definetely not from these two fellas!
Our hotel - from the "good old sovjet times" in Kungur
Tiny bathroom, but all you need is there
Actuall, they renovated a bit - but forgot the balcony...!
Sleep, ride, eat - repeat
Old post box at the hotel entrance
Two people with luggage are almost to much, for one of those elevators.
Kiosk / bar in the hotel
Next morning: on the way to the ice caves.
In the caves is a temperature of -2 to +5 Celsius
...outside, it was +5 at 9 a.m. !
In the ice caves...

September, 5th: Kazan to Izhevsk

On our way to Izhevsk, we had a coffee stop at a pittoresque "open-air-museum-coffee-...thing"
By the way: it was the coldest day (so far) with 8 to 11 degrees Celsius - but no rain!
In little huts, there were some examples of russian lifestyle.
A break with Vodka.
...ooops - the same guys?!?
No and for the break, they had tea/coffee!!!
A little mosque near our lunch stop.
People start being interested in our bikes.
It will become more!
The restaurant of this nice lady was simple, but warm!
...and the pastries and other dishes she offered, were delicious!
Vast lands in Russia. Harvest time.
Straight, lonely roads, with a curve here and there.
Dinner in Izhevsk
...at a bavarian location.
Prijatnogo apetita (bon apetit).
The view from our hotel room to the Kalashnikov museum.

... ...
...including our support vehicle (the left one !!!).
Bernd met our russian partner Vasiliy, who helped us fixing some challenge at the border, when we entered from Estonia.
Edelweiss dinner in Moscow
Peter tried a soup with lamb tongue and it was delicious.
Nice - but we will continue our journey on our bikes!

August, 29th: Vyshny Volochek to Moscow

I can't help myself: does this really look like "royal food"???

August, 26th: Tour start from Tallinn to St. Petersburg (Russia)

Now, we finally ride...!
...not too much riding: waiting at the border, to leave Estonia.
Thanks to Bernd for this picture!

This was not enough: at the russian side, it took us some more hours, until we finally entered this beautiful country.

My (our) City Hotel in Tallinn
Welcome and all the best!
Welcome briefing in the conference room of our hotel.
Marc and...
Alex (our russian tour guide) are presenting...
Peter, Bernd, Royce, Willi and Jörg are listening.
For our welcome dinner, we went to a midieval guild house (Olde Hansa).
As there was no electricity back in those times, candles were our only light.
Bernd was selected as the head/master of our table and tasted the bread first.
Our menu
Typical dresses (for the employees), language, drinks and meals with some music in the background, gave us a perfect "ancient" feeling.
We did not expect to be (literally) filled up with so much alcohol (Vodka, Schnaps, Liquor, etc.), which was served during the evening - in addition to our met/honey beer (or beer with herbs).
But everybody enjoyed the event.

Welcome to Tallinn; welcome to the 2017 Asia worldtour leg from here to Bangkok.

Hey Alex,
yes - the journey is long (time and distance); what we might forget are certain hotel names in particular towns...
...but not the adventures, impressions - or people (like you)!
It is a lot, and it takes time to "process" it. But it is an unforgettable memory for each and everyone!
...and the blog also helps a bit to remember... LOL

Lieber Willi
