Even the best trips come to an end. Today cruised back to Havana, mostly on the main road that connects Varadero with the Capital City. After a nice coffee break at the Bacunayagua bridge, the biggest bridge of Cuba, we enjoyed lunch near the Jibacoa beach and then reached Cojimar, a place made famous by Hemingway. Entering Havana, a last picture at the Plaza de la Revolucion and then we unfortunately had to give the bikes back. Hasta pronto, Cuba!!!
Leaving Remedios we used the "Circuito Norte", the road that slowly took us to Varadero. This road is not perfectly paved (as usual here!) and passes through rural areas, where the landscapes are dominated by palms and sugar cane plantations. All kind of vehicles on the road, and also some rain showers, so we had to pay extra attention! Approaching Varadero, we could visit Al Capone's house (that he used as a deposit for alcohol) and we finally reached our hotel in time for a swim!
Today we took it very easy, the whole morning was used to enjoy the beach and the pool of our beautiful resort, and after lunch we rode to Remedios. We stopped for a picture in the middle of the causeway between the cayos and the mainland and then we reached this very pretty small colonial centre where we slept in "Casas Particulares" (something like our B&Bs) and we could experience the authentic Cuba! This area was badly damaged by the last hurricane and there are still many things to be fixed!
After leaving our hotel, we reached the little fishing village of Casilda, near Trinidad, and we stopped for a picture in the place where Michael had been "stranded" here more than 40 years ago! We then reached the Valle de los ingenios, at the Iznaga tower that is the most famous landmark of the area, and that was used to control the work of the slaves when this valley was a very important centre for the production of sugar. A beautiful ride through enchanting landscapes took us then to Santa Clara, where we could visit the mausoleum and museum dedicated to Che Guevara, and where we also had lunch before heading to Cayo Santa Maria in the middle of the ocean!
A shorter ride, but much more challenging today! Before leaving Cienfuegos, we stopped in its fascinating historic centre, and then headed to El Nicho, a waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation in the Sierra del Escambray, where we also had lunch. After that, we discovered how much damage the hurricanes can cause, because the road to "Topes de Collantes" was almost destroyed in some sections! Anyway we made it to Trinidad, and some of us also took the chance to explore a little bit what is considered the best preserved colonial town of Cuba.
Welcome to the biggest (and most interesting!) island of the Caribbean, welcome to Cuba!
This morning, after the motorcycle handover, we left Havana and headed East, partly on the motorway, the Cuban Autopista, that is not really like a European or American highway! Around lunchtime we reached the famous "Bay of Pigs" in the town of Playa Larga, we had lunch in the same area and, before reaching Cienfuegos, we could also visit the museum in Playa Giron dedicated to the "Bay of Pigs" invasion.
