Quite a big group of enthusiastic motorcyclists is gathering in Caput Mundi, the glorious Rome, for a long ride across Southern Italy, all the way down to Sicily! Some of them have decided to join our guided city tour to explore some of the most famous corners of this ancient capital.
Time to leave behind us the morning traffic of Rome and to move on our way south. In less than an hour we are far into small backcountry roads up on the hills. For lunch we went back down to the coast, enjoying some sun and (guess what?) some pasta in Sperlonga, a popular beach town. In the evening we reach Pompei, where we are going to spend two nights: this area is so rich of sights that one day is just not enough!
Today we have plenty of possibilities: morning stroll around the impressive ruins of Pompei and then afternoon ride to Sorrento and Amalfi Coast for example. And what about ending the day with a tasty pizza napolitana?
Leaving Pompei we head once again towards the coast, cruising along the southern part of Amalfi until Salerno. From here we continue our journey through Campania savoring one of its most renowned produce: the mozzarella di bufala. And where it's the best place to try it? In Paestum, famous not only for the ancient Greek ruins but also for this cheese.
Today we have to share the road with bycicles, but not just regular bikes. The Giro d'Italia runs along the coast just south of Maratea, so we are forced to a fairly long detour around the mountains until we can reach the coast again.
Our discovery of southern Italy will leave Calabria today and with a short ferry ride reach Sicily. A late morning stop in the beach town Scilla is the perfect way to say bye to the continent (as Sicilians like to refer to mainland Italy) and to move forward with the island.
Another rest day... And of course we have several options to shape the day ad we prefer. We start with a ride up and down Etna first climbing the north side and then riding up to Piano Provenzano from east.
In the afternoon there is still time to either visit Taormina - of the prettiest city in Sicily - or to walk down the steps to the beach.
