Adventure Laos & Vietnam - 3LV1802

Friday, November 23, 2018 | Holger Homann | Asia

Chiang Mai - HouayXai

Ready for the adventure: Mark, Michael, Charlene, Karl, Eric and Christian.
The surrealistic white Temple Wat Rong Khun, close to Chiang Rai.
Our beautiful couple Mark and Charlene!
exploration at the coffee stop
we arrived at the Mekong which we will cross now to Laos
The border officer wanted to have a foto with us, so we HAD TO line up

HouayXai - OudomXai

close!
In the Mon-Khmer village Phong providing information
he has a harpoon in his hand for hunting rats and fish
the kids still not sure wether to cry or to laugh )
Here the cute grandmas grill a rat. Tja, why not?!
I gave her my lighter
After I "was attacked" by the children, Phong lined them up: One cookie each!
A stop at the Luang Namtha rice fields; just beautiful

OudomXai - DienBien Phu - Sapa - Nghia Lo

And it is charming!
slowly we get painted
one of the many land slides on our way
an original Lao bridge Handmade!
Our Vietnam approach...
and a really bad road on the Vietnamese side - here the good part
but everyone in a good mode - especially Michael
Eric in Vietnam
Michael ordered a bike wash...
During the pipe explanation of Mr Thanh...
...and Vietnamese coffee enjoyment
Tja...and where is Christian? That's a long story and he would have to tell.
Our roads are getting better and better. I explained at the briefing on this side of the mountain take care of the chips and on the other side it will be "smeary" (means slippery...the road changed completely. A tough ride for tough riders! WOW!
Our earth road up the mountain...
Karl invented this stop and the whole thing developed...
The giant in town... and I am not that tall!
Michael and Karl discovering the baby on the back of the lady wrapped in a scarf
This girl in Edelweiss colors already!
And Karl made the lady sit on his bike...
She had fun!
and the kids obviously too!
making them to astronauts
Trom Tan pass - just amazing views (if one sees something)
Our parking in Sapa. Our approach to the hotel the last half an hour: Interesting! All roads under construction.
Cute!
Our nice dinner in a French colonial style house

Hanoi

Gathering for our small walking tour through Hanoi...
Hanoi impressions...
This fruit is called Gac. Some make energy drinks out of it...
...others make sticky rice with it (actually the majority
You wanna ride here a motorcycle?! Yes, we want and it is fun!

Mai Chau - Xam Neua - Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang

Kwai gab docmai - suai suai
(Means the water buffalo with flowers on his head, so beautiful)
We "fought" our way out of Hanoi and we are back in the rural area, heading towards Mai Chau
Arrival in our nice resort in Mai Chau
relaxing at the pool
the landscape around our resort - I took the bicycle
Our dinner...
...and later with a dance show, performed by the Thai (hilltribe/ minority living in this valley)
Mike did it - getting in between the clapping bamboo
The morning after
getting some excitment..
...nice jungle roads
super beautiful landscape
...and above 1000m the first green rice fields on our tour.
yummy worms - alive of course
We made it back into Laos!
...and got immediately the Laos package
getting wilder...
...and wilder
and "road" construction..
This gives a good impression of the chaos - and that evening we got even more chaos. Wow!
The next morning just a couple of kilometers out of Nong Khiaw, high up in the remote Lao mountains
Michael and Eric..in the fascinating landscape
Our approach to Luang Prabang, not the standard one
Luang Prabang Finale!

Luang Prabang - Pakbeng - Chiang Kham - Chiang Mai

Here is my new bike
No...on the left hand side is my replacement bike for the last 2 days in Laos. Fast help from our local operator. Super job!
Our playground for the next 15 minutes.
The corner before I passed a bus...and they put chains on the tires!
OMG I thought, what will happen now??!!
Then I saw I minivan sliding backwards...
Nothing happened, neither to the people nor to the motorcycles, not even a bruise. It was so slippery that one could not even start with the motorcycle! Amazing roads!
Charlene, thank you for the beautiful picture!
Maybe a 27-28% gradient angle but like ice
Our strong Charlene walking uphill!
Michael got a little bit painted...but we all made it uphill and everyone was in a good mood!
Crossing the Mekong again
Marc
Our amazing resort in Pakbeng
Yiehaa, another day in paradise!
Starting with a 140 km offroad section
still trying to find the school in one og the Khmu villages...
And here we go: The kindergarten...just sweet!
the higher grades 4-5th. And all well disciplined. Here in SEA a teacher has a high level in the society. Everyone is looking up to the teacher especially the chidren!
One of the teachers taking over the books and colored pencils we purchased the day before
and after...a pic with the motorcycle, of course!
Thank you for the picture Mark. Cute!
Now it is time to leave
Sabai-di!!!
Christian studies the map
Getting stalled again by construction works. So next year we have a beautiful road here...maybe...unpredictable we learned on our journey here! Just one heavy rainfall can make the difference already!
We stopped at another school on the way
Arrival in our nice resort in Chiang Kham, Thailand! We made it!
Safely back in Chiang Mai!
What a great tour with great people (!!!) seeking the real adventure!
That is what we got
See you on next tours!
