Thailand Extreme 4TH1902

Thursday, November 21, 2019 | Michael Göbel / Marc Adamiak | Asia

Day 1 - Arrival in Chiang Mai

Our Extreme team this time comes from USA, Scottland and Germany. There was a special festival going on in Chiang Mai, where the sky at night was iluminated by thousands of lampignons or a kind of baloon. Very nice!

Thousands of light baloons in the air

Day 2 - Chiang Mai - Chiang Kham - 305 km

After leaving the city traffic of Chiang Mai behind(the city traffic was interresting too!),  we had a great first riding day through beautiful mountain scenery and charming villages. Dinner at Rico Resort was wonderful!

Our hotel Rico Resort at night

Day 3 - Chiang Kham - Nan - 300 km

Even though, all days on this tour are fantastic, today's ride is exceptional.

Not just, that we crossed the highest point (with rreeaaally very pleasant 20 degrees Celsius) - no, we enjoyed a rollercoaster alike ride on smaller and on wider roads with almost no straight bit!

But, the surrounding (typical small villages, jungle-ish parts and great views down to the valleys) was just breathtaking too!

Great views...
...in perfect weather conditions.
Typical thai food for our dinner...
...enjoy!

Day 4 - Restday Nan - 270 km

Restday? We did not have a real rest. We went for a spectacular ride along the Lao border. Some sections were quite tecnical, with potholes and dirt on the road, but great fun.

Lunch with local noodle soup

Day 5 - Nan - Chiang Khong - 340 km

Quite a long riding day, full of curves. Some did an exhausting hike to Phuchi Fa, a lookout point at the border to Laos. In the afternoon we reached the Mekong,  the lifeline of Southeast Asia. Our hotel in Chiang Khong called Baan Sakuna Resort is just amazing!!!!!!!

First stop...
...at an amazing viewpoint...
...quite soon, after we started
Quick coffee break at a shop, that sold almost everything...!
Curves and...
...breathtaking landscapes accompanied us
For lunch, the spot could not have been more fantastic - at a waterfall...!
James enjoys the atmosphere after lunch
At Phuchi Fa...
...some brave guys (like Charles) "conquered" the peak and got rewarded with a stunning view
Before we reached the hotel, the group stopped for some great pics of the Mekong river

Day 6 - Chiang Khong - Mai Ai 250 km

A great ride along the Mekong in the morning, a tourist stop at the Golden Triangle and a challenging narrow road along the Myanmar border. A visit at a hilltribe village in the afternoon,  a day full of highlights!

Daily briefing with a view
Wide, curvy and perfect roads lead us into the day
Quite touristy, but a must:
...the golden triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet
Back to wonderful curves, curves, curves on an old (but now paved) smuggler's path...
...along the border to...
...Myanmar
For lunch, we enjoyed the simple, bit typical and delicious soup along the way
Still up in the mountains, we passed banana trees, coffee and tea plantations (photo)
Up there and on the descend, we had always fantastic views into the valleys

Day 7 - Mai Ai - Pai - 270 km

Today we did the road of the thousand curves to Pai,  what an experience! But that was not all, elefants, waterfall and Pai nightlife made this day perfect.

Day 8 - Pai - Mae Sariang - 270 km

After the road of the thousand curves yesterday,  we did the road of the two thousand curves today, going to Mae Sariang. What a blast! But we also visited a beautiful little village by boat, famous for the long neck women. This day was a day to remember .

Day 9 - Mae Sariang - Chiang Mai - 270 km

Ob our last riding day back to Chiang Mai, we had all kind of roads, from easy sweepers to single lane concrete tracks. One more waterfall and some elefants on the way.

The traffic coming into Chiang Mai was quite intense,  but the group did really well.

A great tour with great riders and pillions comes to an end. What an experience!
