In sweepers heaven! (CGX2301)

Monday, June 19, 2023 | Wim Doms | Europe

Arrival day - Bad Kreuznach, Germany

Welcome to Germany!

Getting ready for 8 days on the best hidden roads of Germany's Eiffel region, Belgium's legendary Ardennes and France's Elzas.

Riding day 1 - Bad Kreuznach - Nürburgring

That's our first riding day all in the bag! A tale of two rivers it was, first following the Rhine, then switching over to the (vineyard-filled) banks of the Mosel river. And finally to settle in for the night at the legendary Nürburgring racetrack... WITH live racing action to see right from our room balcony! Bliss!

Sweepers heaven? Yes we did!

Some technical sections inbetween? Did that too, just to get the first switchback practice under oir belts.

Happy looking departure pictures this morning in sunny Bad Kreuznach
Paid a visit to Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, at the confluence point of our two theme rivers.
Always hectic and buzzing busy in the medieval town of Cochem by the Mosel river. But we managed to sneak in some unofficial parking to go grab a coffee.

And then... this happened! Yes it really is one of the most famous racetracks in the world. And yes that really is the view from our room! Racing really is life, everything before or after is just... well... waiting.
And as the sun.sets over this amazing track, we start looking forward to tomorrow. Sweet (racing) dreams!

Riding day 2 - Nürburgring - Aachen

What a second riding day! From the roaring engines of the Green Hell (the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife) to the historic city of Aachen. Along the way we took moments to reflect on very recent history (the still rebuilding towns in beautiful Ahrtal after the massive floods of 2021), and not so recent but still very relevant history (the impressive exposition on 1930's Germany at Vogelsang IP).

Just goes to show: it's about riding motorcycles, of course. But also so much more. Edelweiss Bike Travel in a nutshell, that.

There was just no getting away from the Nordschleife without some time to watch exceptional cars and bikes on the track. Boys will be boys...
A place of contemplation and important history at Vogelsang in the heart of the Eifel National Park. Views couldn't be more perfect to sit down and reflect...
And then how about that for an evening view? Magic sunday evening concert at the Dom in Aachen!

Riding day 3 - Aachen-Bouillon

A Belgian tourguide seemed to be all excited this morning in Aachen... And for good reason, because there isn't much better in this job than taking people to your own (albeit in this case very little) country!

Destination: the tiny cosy Belgian town of Bouillon. The day's highlights before that: a view in Holland, a lunch at the racetrack and an encounter with a hardcore motorcycling gang...

Three flags... three countries... one amazing view over Aachen, where we just spent the night.
"Calls for a picture!" say John and Joan
For a first stop in tiny Belgium, how's that for a view?
Belgiium is also the country where an open restaurant for lunch is almost impossible to find on a monday. But with a tourguide who sometimes also works in motorsport... you can sneak in for lunch on the pit building of the most beautiful track in the world. Lucky shot, but welcome at Spa-Francorchamps!
Long riding day. Hot temperatures. That calls for... yup: ice cream !
Part of the group went for the extra twisty loop through the Belgian Ardennes. And those views really made it worthwhile! But then... a dangerous looking, hardcore motorcycling gang turned up...
49.9 cc. Highly tuned. And on the right downslope,.with a decent downwind and a cool beer in sight... these guys FLY! Half an hour added to our photo stop, half an hour of smiles and happy conversation!
All that talking made us arrive a little late in Bouillon, only to discover that Alan had prepared us some... erm... ice?
Oh no wait, we're in Belgium... Ice cold boot beer time!!
From a good old fashioned bootbeer to a very fancy dinner. It all happens on the same evening on an.Edelweiss tour!

Riding day 4 - Bouillon-Differdange

Bye bye Belgium!

Well, until lunch, at least, because we do a bit of border hopping today. Into France, back to Belgium, and then finally to the Grand-Duché of Luxembourg. Where, eventually and after a last slight unforeseen detour in Luxembourg's quite notorious rush hour , everyone made it sound and safely to our two-night-stay in Differdange.

Belgium... it's green, it's quiet, it's picture perfect. And then...

... a party starts! Even befote 10 in the morning
A highlight this, and not just for us, but also for the cows watching our improvised Round-the-RT-dancefloor!
Things were heating up seriously now (the weather, that is, not the dancing parties), so we headed for the Chateau Fort in Sedan to find some refreshments in the shade.
More refreshments spotted in the afternoon... at the abbey of Orval. However... these would have to wait until the evening, for obvious reasons

Riding day 5 - The restday Tour de... Luxembourg

Not many countries allow for an (almost) entire loop around their borders as a restday ride. Luxembourg does, and it is truly surprising how many great riding roads fit within such a tiny little country! A little group of three riders went out to explore, while others decided to go and enjoy the buzzing center of Luxembourg city (thank you, free public transport in this country!) or go for a free ride.

Great riding roads lead up to... great hiking places! We only explored a little part of the unique gorges in Müllertal, but already quite impressive!
Yes, Samy did just fit through that tiny little gap behind him there. Tight!
Maybe THE iconic view in Luxembourg: the Chateau in Vianden, ranked one of the world's top 20 prettiest castles.
Turns out Vianden also has one of the world's top-something prettiest lunch places! We decided to enjoy and took a nice long time for lunch, some coffee and a lot of interesting conversation. Relaxing! It's rest day after all, right?
And how could you not relax when views like this are literally waiting around every corner? Luxembourg: a hidden little gem, but we enjoyed it to the fullest!

Riding day 6 - Differdange-Nancy

Off to France! Just five minutes out of the hotel, we cross the border into France and that country will be our home for the next two riding days. First destination: Nancy. The city, that is. With a lot of history (and some healthy physical exercice) along the way.

A sleepy little village in France. Nothing ever happens here, even café's are a rare sight. But a little stretch-the-legs stop is always nice, and we enjoyed the peace and quiet of these forgotten outposts.
Also quiet, but for very different reasons: the serene and touching atmosphere on the WW1-battlefields of Verdun. A place for reflection.
The history explained in the impressive ossuary at Douaumont.
Before setting off again, John decided he needed a stretch. Turns out he has his own private (and clearly very strong!) physiotherapist with him on the back of the bike! Joan carries, John... euh... cracks.
Not far away, in the middle of the rolling hills around Verdun, we found an Alan. Our Alan! Turns out he does not only prepare delicious picnics, but can even do serious landscaping works with an Edelweiss-van
More stretching going on in the afternoon! This time it's Tom leading the session!
And more history in the afternoon as well. At the Butte de Montsec, we actually even step on American ground and learn more about the history of this whole region.
And after a long and very healthy day, Kenny decides the exercice has earned him a local reward. And the don't get more local in Northern France than a very typical Picon-bière! Kristy has her doubts, we suspect...

Riding day 7 - Nancy-Rott

Ready for the most challenging riding day of the whole tour! Out of Nancy we grab a good 20 minutes of nice and easy motorway which brings us to the foot of the Vogezen mountains. Nowhere near Alps-altitudes, for sure, but a fantastic mountain range to ride in. And this time of year, before the holiday season starts, we have those amazing roads all to ourselves!

First stop to prepare for all the twisties that are coming up: a wonderfully typical french café, which we share only with the locals. The just as typically french 'patisserie'-shop right next door, was very welcoming too
And here we are, way up on the plateaus of the Vogezen. Nice and brisk morning air and wide open views all around.
Since picnic yesterday turned out to be such a success, we just did another one! This time just off a small mountain road, underneath a wonderful shady tree. No landscaping by Alan needed this time
Over the last few days, our group seems to have developed a taste for the sweeter things in life. Afternoon coffee stop? Afternoon ice cream stop!
After a few last stops on the way, seeing remains of the Maginot line so typical for the northern part of the Vogezen, we land at our final overnight stop: Le Cleebourg in the countryside village of Rott. And that view really is straight off our hotel balcony.

Riding day 8 - The final one... back to Bad Kreuznach

Seems unbelievable that it is already eight days ago that we started our riding... Is even more unbelievable that in all those days we have never even come close to a single drop of rain! Truly exceptional for this part of the world, but the positive vibes in this group must have made the weather gods very happy! One more then, and yes: that one too was sunny all the way!

Sunrise scene in Rott... Simply amazing, beautiful and so quiet!
And there they go! Wim on the red Ducati leads that long trail of motorcycles out off Rott into the last riding day. A big group it was, but thanks to all our guests, always keeping a watchful eye out to the one behind, it was all like clockwork!
A few last spectacular views from up high at lunch, and there we already start seeing the valleys that will lead us back to our starting point. Bad Kreuznach, here we come! (oh, well, we'll grab some cake and ice cream on the way of course, but still, we'll come!)
And here they are! The big group, with 15 guests and two guides, spread over 12 motorcycles, a van and - yes - a car The multinational group as well, with origins in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Israel and - if you count those two crazy guides - Italy and Belgium too. But most importantly: the kind, caring, interesting and always - AL-WAYS- happy and smiling group! What a time we had, and how we hope to meet again! (And you know what, we have a sneaky suspicion we might just do that See you soon guys!
