Tuesday, April 30, 2024 | Jan Van der Jagt | Europe

1st riding day: from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos

A first riding day is always extra exciting, what can you expect, how will it be?! Well, we soon found out that Crete has many, many winding and curvy mountain roades, well maintained amd gorgeous views!

At our first coffee stop it's all smiling faces! Refik, Ernst, Gunnar, Jan and Murat
Due to the Greec hospitality, coffee turned into lunch! We were offered grilled bread, tomatoes, fresh cucumber and of course fetta chees
Our waiter is the proud owner of this power scooter
In the distance there is snow on the mountains
The famous Cretan sheep
One of the many beautiful views
Windmills, used for the production of olive oil

2nd riding day: to the east coast

With almost 300km we are in for a nice day of riding in the more remote part of Crete. Going back and forth to the coast, we'll ride countless switchbacks in the rural area.

Mit fast 300 km erwartet uns ein schöner Fahrtag im abgelegeneren Teil Kretas. Auf dem Weg zur Küste und zurück fahren wir unzählige Serpentinen durch die ländliche Gegend.

Sunset in Agio Nicolaos
At our first coffee stop there is a meeting off classic cars.
An olive oil mill, still in use
A great place for lunch at the beach
The grill is being prepared for our lunch
Members of the polar bear team went for a swim. Highly recommendable!
A picture stop at Bramiana dam. The water is being used for the crops in the many green houses in this region
A full moon over Agios Nikolaos

3rd riding day: from Agios Nikolaos to Mátala

After a good night rest and processing all the impressive immiges we'll be heading inland, to the south.

Nach einer erholsamen Nachtruhe und der Verarbeitung all der beeindruckenden Einwanderer machen wir uns auf den Weg ins Landesinnere, nach Süden

One of the many beaches we saw today
We have stopped acting normal, not so difficult for some
Refik found a nice souvenir
The amphitheatre of Gortyna
With centuries old olive trees
Warm wind from Africa has been beating us the entire day, we made it save in Mátala
These caves, were people have been living since the Stone age, are pretty impressive
These cave men are feeling right at home
A proud Murad, joining the Silver club of Edelweiss

4th riding day: from Mátala to Chania

On paper this riding day should be the best! As all days are great we will see if this is true. Regarding all the hearpins we will be doing and Preveli beach we are in for a great day of riding!

First stop of the day is Preveli beach!
A river streams into the sea. Palm trees, birds and hardly no people. It feel like we're on a deserted island
Of course we went swimming and enjoyed a lovely coffee
Ernst was dreaming...
And there they are, the hear pins! Many, many hear pins
Enjoyment all around!
A brochure worthy picture
Lunch at the sea, again. One never gets enough of that
The ride up to Aradena gorge was truly spectacular!
So is the gorge
Murad is dreaming also...

5th riding day: around the western part of Crete

Spectacular views, great roads, countless hairpins and curves. It's Crete at its best!

Spektakuläre Aussichten, tolle Straßen, unzählige Hair pins und Kurven. Kreta zeigt sich von seiner besten Seite!

On the west coast, from were you can see the mainland of Greece, we had the best fresh orange juice and made friends with the local dunky Petros
The road going to the Samalia gorge is spectacular!
The gorge itself is so deep that one can't see the bottom
Back in the hotel we were filled with a great experience and adrenaline. And a boot beer
Dinner in the best fish restaurant in Chania!

6th and final riding day: from Chania back to Heraklion

With beautiful weather, again, we are in for a worthy last day of riding on this beautiful island. We all think that Crete is a hidden treasure for bikers because it has everything! Good roads, countless twisties, great food, lovely people, spectacular views and it's very quiet

This is how the start of a typical riding day in Crete looks like, with the right ingredients: motorcycle, sun and the sea
Coffee at lake Kournas
And a pipi stop in the Cretan alps
Arkadi monastery, over 500 years old
A collection of the monks skulls who used to live here
Green valley, the see and an ostrich. Could be the title of a book
