3CT1201: Brecon Beacon National Park and Pembrokeshire Coast

Thursday, August 23, 2012 | Thomas Ritt | Europe

Here are some more impressions of our rest day in Brecon Beacon National Park, the ride along Pembrokeshire Coast and our hotel right outside the town of Cardigan.

The original Bridge Over Troubled Water

Having a break in Wales' smallest café

Rudi enjoys the sunshine in Wales. It's not always raining here!

A curve with a view

In a destination like Wales it is important to have a hearty lunch.

Pebble Beach, Wales...

A real fairy tale coffee castle.

Our hotel in Llechryd. This is no typo. The next destination is Betws-y-coed...

Sometimes, when it's cold and wet, you need a hot drink. A bigger one than usual.

The third riding day brought the group into Wales, but not without visiting one of the greatest monuments of mankind: Stonehenge. Despite the crowds we marvelled at the 4,500 year-old masterpiece and wondered, just like everybody else, how did they do it, and why???

Dark clouds over Stonehenge

The group at Stonehenge

A classic English church

This local bloke highly recommended the Red Lion in Lacock. So we took our lunch break here.

Brecon Beacon National Park offers picture-perfect Welsh scenery and great roads, varying in width from 0.7 to 2 lanes. This is our first rest day, but of course we went for a ride anyway.

A thunderstorm is moving into southern Wales

Only Mark missed the ride on the restday

The single track roads in Wales are only about two sheep wide!

Water is all around us!

But the sun comes out frequently, even around here.

Crossing a creek in Wales

Yes, there are Tigers in England. 800s and 1200s, on their way from Hinckley through Cornwall and Wales up to the Isle of Man. The very first Triumph Celtic Tour stops for the night in Exeter, southern England. Here are some impressions:

The first highlight: a visit to the Triumph factory

The Group, waiting for the factory tour to begin

our first lunch in a real English pub

Tour guide Tom tries the "Faggots with mash"...

... Mark from Texas is not so sure!

Did somebody say English weather is bad? We don't think so!

Franz, Keith and Jane, enjoying the first riding day

The village museum in Watchet

Our hotel in Lynmouth is a beautiful English country house full of antiques

And believe it or not: the food is great! (yet to be served...)

Briefing with a view

This is not King Arthur's castle, but we still had lunch here

the group: a small but lively bunch

Exploring the beautiful Cornish coast

Mark checks out the local tombstone styles

And he looks great on his tiger, doesn't he?

Exeter, our stop for tonight. This is the city's cathedral, built from 1112 and 1400.

Exeter has a pretty old town with a multitude of pubs...
