Sicily – this island offers everything a motorcycle rider can dream of: curvy mountain streets, little traffic and cosy trattorias. We start our trip in Catania and as Goethe once wrote: "Italy without Sicily is soulless. Here lies the key to everything." A glistening sea, Mediterranean delicacies, cultural jewels and motorcycle roads. Mount Etna with its soft smoke cloud above it is always in our view. We cross the Western part of the island and dare to ride the centre of the Mafia, Corleone.
On the Italian mainland we enjoy the popular holiday town Tropea and needn't wait for the next highlight – our route in direction North along the unique Amalfi coast. The many bays look inviting for a little swim – keep your bathing trunks ready. At the end of our tour Rome impresses us with a mix of metropolitan flair, antique architecture and people from all over the world.

The first and last days mentioned in the itinerary are the arrival and departure days for tour start and end. Depending on the country you start in, you may have to leave a day early, subsequently, you will arrive one day later back home. This is the route for the tour that starts in Catania. If you choose to begin your journey in Rome, the itinerary will be reversed. Arrival time should be arranged before 3 pm on the arrival day. Book your flights accordingly! Route and overnight places may change due to unforeseen events.

Rome - Sicily

Thanks to Edelweiss Bike Travel, we can look back on an incredibly unique tour. From booking to our 11-day journey with Alan, Marko, and Domenico - our experience was perfect in every way. From the start of the tour in Sicily to its end in Rome, a broad smile was always on our faces, and it was hardly possible to fully capture all the images, smells, and sounds with our senses. We were especially amazed by the many small mountain villages where we usually spent our breaks. Here, we recharged our batteries with espresso and conversations with the locals, or we simply sat down and tried to burn the countless and unique moments into our memories. During the daily rides, we were always overwhelmed by the landscape, and the winding mountain roads were simply incredible to ride on. Enjoying the rush of wind, we finally ended the tour with a tear in our eye because none of us wanted it to end. Would we book the trip again? Absolutely and without hesitation.

Ancient monuments and modern roads

One of the great things that motorcycle tour operators can do for you is to organise a route that includes a lot of outstanding destinations – and then connect them with spectacular motorcycle roads. I have found Edelweiss to be particularly good at this, on a variety of outings from places like Cuba to the Alps and Norway, and they have done it particularly well on this 11-day Sicily to Rome (and vice versa) tour. Connecting interesting places with good bike roads is not as easy as it sounds, but Edelweiss surely did it on this trip. We got a mild but still enjoyable introduction to Sicily’s roads from Catania to our first stop, the Villa Romana del Casale. This Roman country house from the 4th Century CE has 3,500 square metres of spectacular floor mosaics including pictures of ten Roman girls – in bikinis! This was followed up by the classic ruins of the Valley of the Temples before we reached our hotel near Agrigento. This demonstrated another advantage of having an experienced tour operator; the hotel, set in a green and beautifully sculpted garden, was exceptional. All the way north past the Mafia-tainted small towns of Prizzi and Corleone to Cefalu on the north coast, we sampled Sicily’s best mountain roads the next day. That was the pattern for nearly a week – wonderful and challenging roads and classic stops. A ride up along the slopes of Mount Etna gave us an idea of the power of the volcano, and our hotel in Taormina was a true classic, right next to the pedestrianised old town with its mixture of shops selling high fashion and tourist tatt.Once we crossed on the ferry to the shin of the boot of Italy, we sampled some vertiginous coastal cliff roads and more classic places like Paestum and Pompeii over a few days before checking into another classy hotel in Rome. The end of the tour, and a shared decision to try more of the Edelweiss Motorbike Tours.
