Tour of Tuscany - a tour guide's view

Monday, March 20, 2017 | Stephan Weckschmied | News

After an intensive Tourguide Training Program, which lasted several weeks, the time passed so quickly that now, all of a sudden, my first “real” Tour is knocking already on the door. Luckily I got the chance from Edelweiss to make a Pre-Ride of the tour. This way I am able to gain first-hand experience about culture, street conditions, hotels as well as meeting locals and finding interesting spots and hidden treasures.

The destination was Tuscany and Umbria. All my gained knowledge, a lot of enthusiasm and the New Honda Africa Twin made my day perfect to leave the Edelweiss Office in Mieming/Austria to Firenze/Italy.

The first 200 km were very rainy, foggy and cold. However, after passing the Brenner Pass the temperature raised 1 degree Celsius basically every 15 minutes – until 24°C when I arrived in Donnini/Firenze. On my route from Donnini/Firenze to Siena I am rolling through the beautiful hills of Chianti where the famous wine is growing.

The beautiful scenery of cypress allees and olive trees makes you never want to leave this place again.

On Greve de Chianti´s Piazza de Matteotti, you can basically see and feel the typical Italian life. We have to stop for an Espresso or Cappuccino and enjoy this scenery.

After the espresso and hundreds of curves later I arrived in Siena with enough time to see the beautiful Market Place and the Dome.

The next Day trip was a ride from Siena to Assisi, via Montalcino- Bagno Vignoni -Montepulciano and the famous Lago Trasimeno. Hardly any traffic made the ride spectacular curve by curve up and down the hills - always smelling sweet jasmine and breathing the fresh air. All of this makes me really looking forward to the first time when I will be riding together with our guests through this fantastic area.

Arriving in Assisi after a quick stop at the Lago Trasimeno you will have an impressive view on this very spiritual city!

The last Day of the Pre-Ride was the ride through the National Park of Monte Sibillini….. the “Tibet of Italy” as the locals say. From Assisi riding south through almost zero traffic during the morning, you will be rewarded by a spectacular view.

After more than 1800 km on the bike, I feel prepared and thrilled to start the “Tuscany Classic Tour” with our international guests.

Stephan, this tour of Tuscany seems thrilling.
In April we would like to do a similar itinerary following Via Francigena by bike with our sons (14 and 16).
Looking at the Tuscany official web site it seems gorgeous (https://www.visittuscany.com/en/itineraries/the-via-francigena-by-bicycle/).
I just found this tour https://www.tuscanyquintessence.com/tours/5-day-special-francigena-tuscany-bike-tour/ and it seems very nice.
Do you know Via Francigena? Do you have any suggestion?
